Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to provide nursing care within state standards of practice and the policies of the Hospital. 
Makes decisions regarding direct patient care needs and communicates appropriate information to other team members. Helps maintain equipment, supplies, and cleanliness of unit as a whole.  May have additional responsibilities as designed by the Operating Room Manager or Chief Nursing Officer, which include, but are not limited to, providing patient care in other departments (after being oriented and educated), serving on committees, participating in quality improvement audits, and projects.

Essential Job Functions

  • Formulates and implements nursing philosophy and objectives consistent with the stated goals of the Hospital.
  • Assists in developing policies, procedures, and staffing essential to the achievement of the philosophy and objectives of the Hospital. Keeps up to date on current trends in nursing practice and patient care.
  • Evaluates patient care activities.
  • Ensures continued compliance with government regulatory agencies, i.e.  HIPPA, the facilities accrediting organizational standards, and DNV.
  • Assures documentation of patient care meets criteria dictated by legal practice, state, and federal health standards.
  • Assigns responsibilities and delegating authority to PreOp and/or PACU Techs or CNA’s that shall facilitates safe, effective, and efficient care for the patient at the time of admission, pre- and post- operatively and at the time of discharge.
  • Provides support in developing and maintaining effective relationships with the hospital staff and the medical staff.
  • Maintains, analyzes, and evaluates standards of nursing care within the Pre-op, Pre-Admit and PACU areas in compliance with professional nursing standards.
  • Initiates and / or supports activities to control costs.
  • Reduces chance of nosocomial infection by adhering to infection control and environmental safety practices; adheres to OSHA standards and universal precautions as it relates to blood borne pathogens and/or hazardous waste.
  • Increases chance of Correct Site Surgery by adhering to Universal Protocol for Correct Site Surgery safety practices and checklist.
  • Holds Tech and/or CNA accountable for assigned responsibilities.
  • Participates in quality control studies within the pre-operative and PACU areas in collaboration with the Operating Room Manager to improve the services the departments provide to patients.
  • Assists in maintaining the quality improvement responsibilities of PACU/PreOp’s specificrequirements.
  • Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance, and participates in emergency preparedness drills.
  • Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy and HIPPA regulations.
  • Follows the Hospital's professional code of conduct and dress code policy.
  • Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians and their office staffs, patients, and employees.
  • Attends all mandatory in-services and meetings.

Basic Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Currently licensed in the state. 
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required. 
  • Two years’ experience required Post Anesthesia Recovery, Pre-op and Pre-admission settings.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence and patient teaching capabilities.
  • Physically and emotionally capable of performing responsibilities of position.
  • Position requires fluency in English; written and oral communication.
